![]() In the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the Douglas County School District 15 can take a deep breath and release a sigh of relief. Thanks to increased funding at the state level and a 40% increase in student population, the ’07-'08 budget reflects a reinstatement of services and an expansion of programs at both district schools.
Tiller Elementary now employs four teachers to alleviate the three-grade blend and to expand special education services. Kindergarten has expanded to four days a week. Technology and software upgrades have been made, a community exercise trail has been created, and, with matching funds from Jane Porter, the playground will have new equipment. The Tiller staff greatly appreciates the generous volunteer work of the late Dick Snyder in the creation of the community walking track. In addition to preventative maintenance of facilities at Tiller, a stairwell will be constructed for safe access between the parking lot and the upper classrooms. At Days Creek Charter School, a part-time assistant director in charge of discipline has been added to the staff as well as an additional classroom teacher. As a selected research site, the middle school will, at no cost to the district, implement the Positive Behavior Support program over the next five years to address student conduct with support from the program leaders at the U of O. The ’07-’08 budget has attended to long-delayed maintenance of facilities. In order to prioritize spending, a five-year facilities plan will be developed by structural experts - although three projects identified by a risk assessment as high need were completed this summer: paving the Days Creek parking lot and finishing the window replacements. In the future, a stairwell will be constructed from the concession stand to the football field. The staff, district school board, and charter board are committed to using available resources in the most advantageous ways possible. We have continued to be blessed by our volunteers, the fundraising efforts of various groups, the altruism of charitable organizations, the generosity of individuals, and donations from local business groups. The schools in the district will continue to provide quality education opportunities due to an abundance of our greatest resource – talented, dedicated, hard-working staff and students supported by a generous community. |
